Canadian-American singer and actress Alanis Morissette conquered the world back in the 90s, and to this day, she has been dubbed as “queen of alt-rock”. During her long career, Alanis was followed by numerous gossips and scandals, but nothing stopped her on her way to the top.

Morissette grew up in a Catholic family in Canada, and she and her twin brother Wade began to take an interest in music as children. She started playing the piano at the age of seven and went to dance classes. The singer released her first single in 1989, and her first album “Alanis” topped the charts in Canada in 1991 and a year later in the US.

The singer often pointed out in interviews that she suffered from depression as a teenager, and she also had several eating disorders. It took her many years to recover from it all, and about ten years ago, she began to actively participate in several associations involved in raising awareness about eating disorders among adolescents.

She also had a turbulent private life until she settled down. Morissette dated actor and comedian Dave Coulier in the early ’90s. In an interview in 2008, Dave said that he was the inspiration for her big hit, “You Oughta Know“. The singer did not comment on the allegations.

One of her most famous relationships is the one with actor Ryan Reynolds. Although they are both happily married today, they are reluctant to remember their relationship from the beginning of the new millennium.

Alanis and Ryan met in 2002 on the birthday of mutual friend Drew Barrymore and were a couple for two years. They got engaged, but never stood in front of the altar. Although they both tried to hide the details of the break up for years, the singer didn’t hide she was hurt.

She pointed out several times that the break up was not her decision, and judging by the music she was releasing afterward, it took her a long time to recover. The whole album “Flavors of Entanglement” talks about the separation.

I’ve been on a constant journey toward finally surrendering and hitting rock bottom that I’ve been avoiding my whole life. So this was a huge, critical juncture for me. Everything broke, and it was an amazing and horrifying time”, Alanis once said about the breakup.

The singer also admitted that she blamed herself for the breakup, but never revealed too many details. After the split, Reynolds didn’t wait long with the next relationship. Just two months after breaking off his engagement to Alanis, Ryan has announced that he is in a relationship with actress Scarlett Johansson.

She met rapper Mario Treadway, known as Souleye, a few years later, and on May 22, 2010, they were married in a private ceremony at their home in Los Angeles. They have three children together and, as they say, enjoy family life.
