A “scholarship” is money given by sponsors of a particular program or coursework by which an individual can receive study at another school, college or university. Depending on the kind of scholarship you have, it can be a grant (financial aid), loan, research funds, or even scholarships to attend specific classes and work on a particular area of study.
Sometimes, these may be used for professional or personal reasons. Most of these are open to students who meet certain criteria but they often require additional financial assistance and time commitment. These types are known as “academic fundings”, “grants” or “research funds”.
However, scholarship applications might lack clarity about whether this grant or loan funding is needed and how much money will be given. Many scholarships come with a clear deadline and many even include a deadline extension for students to submit their applications before the end of the year.
When do scholarship programs occur?
The majority of scholarships happen when student interest and/or ability is relevant to them so that they can obtain the degree of their choice. Fully funded scholarships cover all expenses of students during their college or University.
These can be accessed after high school graduation, while others may start with a specific goal or career that an applicant wants to achieve over the course of their academic journey. All scholarships usually focus on one area of study and one field. They give you access to some resources and information about your chosen path.
What makes scholarship money so expensive?
Generally, in contrast to loans and grants, fees are less than loans and grants and they will vary, depending on the competition. The average scholarship offer is around $500-$1,000. This varies due to the size of the project, duration, and location.
On average, it becomes difficult for the students to pay the first $2,000 of the fee. Keep in mind that the Canadian scholarships are globally most generous academic projects offered to local and international students each year.
There are two main forms of scholarships in terms of cost – private and open scholarships.
Private ones differ from open ones in that the latter requires the application form to include proof of prior success or completion of the course so that the winner must be successful enough to complete the program. Open scholarships, on the other hand, do not need an application form or proof of past success, allowing students to apply to multiple open financial grants and those that are close to the selection criteria.
But what exactly makes it difficult to achieve a scholarship?
There could be several reasons that can be a problem in receiving any type of scholarship.
- First, if you’ve decided to pursue something important, such as a Ph.D. or a post-graduate diploma. At this point, finding donors for money for educational purposes is difficult.
- Second, if you’re a first-generation immigrant, initially you may not receive assistance from parents and family in order to get the visa that allows you to live and work in a different country.
- Third, scholarship money goes towards travel costs which are crucial to finding for studying abroad.
- Lastly, any of these must be competitive, if it’s not then it would not be awarded to someone who did not meet the required entry requirements. We’ll discuss more about scholarship eligibility here!
