First Week of College Guide

Here are some tips and tricks that will help you survive your first week of college.

It’s finally here! You’ve made it to your first week of college. Every university is different and has its own Welcome Week, but one thing is guaranteed no matter where you go to school: you will be BUSY! Your first week of college is going to be a whirlwind, and while freshman orientation will be pretty well-planned and scheduled, there are bound to be times when you’re not sure what to do. Have no fear though! We’ve outlined some tips for making the most of your first week at school.

1. Check to see what Welcome Week events your school has

  • This is a great way to take a break from unpacking and meet new people! Also a great time to score some free pizza and t-shirts.

2. Unpack and organize your room before classes start

  • You’re not going to want to try to balance setting up your room and starting classwork at the same time!

3. Find ways to get involved on campus

  • Attend an involvement fair and sign up for more information on student organizations and clubs that you’re interested in.
  • Look into intramural sports and meet other team members and exchange contact information to get started.

4. Explore the town

  • Go out to dinner with some people from your dorm.
  • Head downtown and find the best restaurants and stores in your area.
  • Go for a walk around campus.
  • Find some hiking trails.

5. Spend some time with your roommate

  • If you have a random roommate, take this first week to spend time with them and get to know them!
  • Attend the welcome week events together.
  • Shop for remaining items you need for your dorm.

6. Walk around campus and find your classes

  • Don’t look like a lost freshman, walk your class schedule so you know exactly where to go on the first day!
  • Time yourself so you know how long it takes to walk from your dorm to your first class. This way you can sleep in as long as possible!

7. Call your parents

  • Don’t forget to call your parents! They miss you!
