Many people are disappointed in Beyoncé following her late endorsement of Beto O’Rourke, Democratic candidate for Texas Senate. The Midterm Elections took place on Tuesday, November 6th. The race for Texas Senate was between Senator Ted Cruz (R) and Beto O’Rourke (D). The results were close; however, Ted Cruz won his re-election by about 200,000 votes. Besides Beyoncé, countless celebrities of all backgrounds urged Americans to register and vote.
Taylor Swift proved to be quite influential this election. On October 7, Swift took to Instagram to endorse Democrat Phil Bredesen for Senate. She urged her fans to register and vote. While her candidate of choice did not win, Swift inspired many to register. About 64,000 new voters registered within only 24 hours of her post.

Despite any negative opinions on Swift, there is no denying that she made good use of her large platform. Beyoncé has a much larger Instagram following than Swift. Taylor has 112 million followers, where Beyoncé has 120 million. Beyoncé, however, posted her endorsement on November 6: Election Day.
The timing of her endorsement was unfortunate. With Beyoncé’s level of fame, many wonder why she waited so long to speak out. Perhaps if she had, registration numbers would have rocketed like they did after Swift spoke out. Her influence on her fans has been overwhelming in the past, and Beyoncé is no stranger to politics. Songs like “Flawless,” “Pretty Hurts,” and “Run the World (Girls)” advocate for feminism and female empowerment. She has supported Colin Kaepernick and the Black Lives Matter movement. During the 2016 Super Bowl Half Time Show, Beyoncé sported a Black Panther inspired wardrobe. She is not afraid of getting political. That being said, fans argued that she should have spoken out sooner.
Keeping her past involvements with politics in mind, it is strange that she would wait so long to voice her endorsement of Beto. The 2018 Midterm Elections were very important for the Democratic Party, as they had a chance at getting more democrats into the Senate, taking control from the currently Republican-dominated Senate. It seems like it would have been a matter of urgency for Beyoncé, a Democrat.
There is no telling what would have happened had she endorsed Beto sooner. Perhaps a wave of new voter registrations would have ensued. Or, perhaps more people would have voted for Beto. Nonetheless, Beyoncé did wait until the day of elections, leaving many fans disappointed as Beto lost the election.
