Nestled in the basement of a nondescript building is a treasure trove of vintage oddities, collectables, and 80’s clothing. I am about to leave after grabbing a bite at the SoWa open market, until a small sign exclaiming, “SOWA VINTAGE MARKET” catches my eye. The sign leads to another sign, which then leads me down a set of stairs into the SoWa Vintage Market.
Various items occupy every corner of the crowded space, from guitars lined up along shelves of clothing to neon signs and skis hanging on the walls. Different vendors focus on slightly different items, but many share common goods. A slightly musty air fills the basement, as one might expect from a good vintage market. I make my way to the nearest vendor, which is displaying racks of old athletic wear and other clothing. The rack is overflowing with bold, saturated colors in a way that only a rack full of 70’s and 80’s clothing can. Among them are the expected Nike windbreakers and Adidas track jackets, along with some old college gear.
Other vendors focus on different types of clothing, from leather jackets and fur coats to designer scarves and neckties.

Towards the back of the space I find a few boxes of old records, and I can’t help myself. The collection is diverse: The Jackson 5, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, and even (ahem) Bill Cosby make an appearance.
Some vendors also have old electronics, including Nintendo NES game cartridges, Polaroid Cameras, film projectors and so on. Most striking, however, has to be an original floppy disk for Microsoft Windows 3.1 installation, dating back to 1992!
After only around thirty minutes, I have to leave for a dinner reservation. There is still much to explore, and I will be back again! If you are ever around the SoWa Art and Design district, make sure to stop by the Vintage Market! You will not be disappointed.
