Firstly, I would like to commend the strength and self-sacrifice you have displayed since coming forward. As I watched you profess your fear during ‘his’ hearing, it made your intentions ever-so-clear. As you said, your only reason for coming forward was out of your own sense of civic duty. And, can I just say, that is one heck of a sense of civic duty. Out of loyalty to your country you have come forward and unearthed a deeply personal and painful experience of yours to the world. You have sacrificed your own privacy and even your own well-doing for the good of our country.

Thousands “March for Our Lives” & Protest For Gun Reform
Secondly, in coming forward you have helped to further expose the issue with our treatment of women once they come forward in accusation of men regarding sexual assault or misconduct – especially in the ‘Me Too’ era. You have been ruthlessly mocked, even by the sitting President of The United States. You have endured the questioning of your intentions, morality, and character. Miraculously, you have done so with grace and class.
I applaud you because you are showing young girls, girls like me, all over the world that what has happened or might happen to them does matter. The final outcome of this is in the hands of the FBI and the Senate. As is the final statement of how much our country is willing to validate the experiences of survivors. You, however, have done more than your part in setting an exceptional example of how to reveal your truth – of how I one day may have to reveal mine or my future daughter hers.
The way you have been treated, however, has inspired fear. It has left me wondering what happens when I may inevitably forget the details of my own story. I have retraced my life the same way you have been forced to retrace yours – trying to account for every little detail.
I have found my introspection eerily similar to the age old question: if a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it, did it fall?
The obvious answer is yes.
However, as each day progresses, I am more and more fearful that your case will prove that the answer is otherwise. If it does, then what?
I will forever admire your courage and the role you have inevitably played in answering my above question. To you, however, I would like to apologize. The brutality you have faced as a result of coming forward is far from fair. You valued your country above yourself and whether you knew the scope that came with stepping forward you’ve stuck with the chase.
You will go down in history, right next to Anita Hill, as a fearless woman who inspired many and purely sought the truth.
Hi, I'm Carly Berry, a sophomore at Boston University.
