Jake Shears, the lead singer and songwriter of the iconic Scissor Sisters, released a solo debut album. The album is appropriately titled, “Jake Shears.” The album features songs influenced by his new life in New Orleans, and his artistic and personal growth. Jake Shears is always looking for new ways to create and produce. This album is proof of that. “Jake Shears” is fun and dynamic, with Southern influences and jazz riffs.
Jake Shears first made a splash in New York with the Scissor Sisters. The group, known for tracks like “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin” and “Let’s Have A Kiki,” performed outrageous and flamboyant sets. Since the band took a break in 2013, Jake Shears has been busy. He performed in the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots,” and wrote his memoir. But, he is an artist through and through, and he felt the urge to write songs again.
The pop songs are upbeat, but also touch on personal themes. For example, in the song “Sad Song Backwards,” he says that he took “handfuls of Prozac.” He wrote this song when he first moved to New Orleans, after breaking up with his partner of 11 years. He put his pain and energy into song writing, creating an album that is both fun and serious.
