NoMBe is a German artist who is now based in Los Angeles with a sound that transcends genre lines. A blend of rock, electronic and R&B, NoMBe was recently called “Hendrix Junior” in the YouTube comment section of his sensational COLORS debut. He’s also caught the attention of Pharrell Williams. Pharrell picked NoMBe’s Can’t Catch Me to be the theme song of his HBO documentary Outpost.
It’s no surprise the big leagues have picked up on NoMBe. His funk infused rock ballads with electric jazz undertones creates a unique sound that truly does not mimic any other artist. If there was any unique genre that reflected “summertime energy”, it would be it.
I first discovered NoMBe a three years ago, instantly hooked on California Girls. I remember my college roommate speaking enthusiastically about the song after I told her I had it on repeat. California Girls has the ability to attract all listeners, regardless of what you consider your favorite genre of music. I’m biased, but something about the line “Oh, how I like the smell of west coast pheromones” invokes oddly specific imagery.

After the Passing of XXXTentacion, the Internet Attempts to Draw Moral Equivalencies
Fast forward two years when Young Hearts (Kuur Remix) came up on my Discovery Weekly on Spotify whilst penning a research paper. Comparatively, I texted my (other) college roommate about the song, and he responded, “I love NoMBe!!”The upbeat remix of an otherwise heartfelt conjures feelings of a tumultuous but worthy love. It adds a layer to the song you never knew you needed. Although the remix arguably takes away from the soulful lyrics, the upbeat remix of the song was exactly what I needed to power through my paper. It quickly topped all of my personal playlists and made me very excited to return back to California. It’s the exact song you’d imagine listening to whilst driving down the PCH top down with ocean breeze weaving through your hair, warm energy of the sun cradling you.
NoMBe has a style and grace on stage that can’t be matched by even the biggest industry names. He moves with a mysteriously sultry energy. He gracefully floats around the small Troubadour stage in a manner that made his stage seem endless. Like ocean water, he moves with graceful but dominant energy. Music aside, just watching him perform was enthralling and unforgettable.
Selling out Troubadour truly is not a shock. His hit song, Wait, has over 16 million streams on Spotify. The groove invokes nostalgic thoughts of a young love. No surprise, given the song is about a middle school love. It had the crowd singing and swaying along, a stark contrast to Freak Like Me which followed a few songs later. The electricity of the instrumentals for his second biggest hit had the crowd jumping up and down in unison, with NoMBe guiding.
As evidenced, the NoMBe has an evidence of genre versatility in his music. However, there is a common theme throughout all of his releases. The lasting sentiments of his music. The emotions NoMBe invokes in his music is indescribable. It’s a sense of longing and nostalgia with a twinge of passion and energy, all packaged nicely in a box of soul.
And bonus points! He tours with an all-female band.
