Naturally, I am being introduced to her culture, and a major part of any culture is music. While I can’t understand any of the words, I have still paid attention to their music.
Their rap music is very similar to American rap in regards to the beat and pace. The other night I hung out with my friend and her other friends. They played Germany’s hottest rappers, and even though I couldn’t understand a single word, it was still good. When I asked my friend what the lyrics actually meant, I discovered that they were extremely similar to American rap lyrics. Most of the songs dealt with drugs, girls, alcohol, and money. Overall, it was fun to experience this music and pay attention to how those around me reacted to it.
The pop music wasn’t as exciting to listen to, as on top of not knowing the words, it didn’t have the same upbeat vibe to it. However, the lyrics themselves are very similar to those of American pop. The songs mostly sing about love, being young, heartbreak, etc.

Surprisingly, in my experience thus far, most Germans listen to American music, especially when it comes to punk music. They also listen to our country music, but I have not heard any country songs sung in German, which isn’t too surprising. Even those who don’t speak or understand English will sing along to American music. I was also surprised to discover that radio stations in Germany and France play a lot of American music despite the language barrier.
In general, German genres are identical to American genres, just in different languages. So, if you ever come to Germany, this is what you can expect when it comes to their musical culture. Or, you can save the plane ticket money and embrace the German culture from America and experience it from a couple thousand miles away.
