In Kay Cannon’s 2018 directorial debut Blockers, three parents played by Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz go on an insane chase trying to stop their daughters (Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlon) from losing their virginity on prom night.
American Pie, Superbad, The Girl Next Door, and many other films in this genre have played with this idea before since it’s something that most teens relate to. Losing your virginity is an experience that most people never forget and I really liked that Blockers decided to film this type of story in the perspective of young women.
Though some scenes were a bit over the top like the massive party at the hotel and Lisa’s (Leslie Mann) car exploding, I found the movie handled the issues between the parents and their parents in a humorous yet positive way.

Album Review: Jorja Smith’s Debut Album ‘Lost & Found’
For instance, we see that Lisa isn’t ready for her daughter, Julie to go away to college. Mitchell (John Cena) still isn’t ready to accept that his daughter, Kayla is capable of protecting herself. Finally, Hunter (Ike Barhinholtz) is struggling to rebuild the relationship with his daughter, Sam after his divorce.
This movie was so much fun to watch and it’s one that I would watch again because there were so many one-liners and scenes that had me laughing to the point that my stomach began to hurt. From its smart and funny script to the strong performances, Blockers had everything that I looked for in this type of genre.
Blockers currently holds an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and have grossed over $36.9 million in the United States and Canada. This is a movie that is worth spending money on at the theaters.
Blockers premiered on April 6.
