Ball State’s women’s volleyball team is currently preparing for its next season that will be underway come August. The Cardinals finished off their 2017 season in 3rd place among all of the MAC (leading the West) and will return to the court hoping to finish their season in MAC Champion contention.
Notable seniors leaving for the Cardinals are Outside Hitter and Defensive Specialist, Bailey Baumer (5), and Opposite, Jessica Lindsey (8). Baumer leaves Ball State with a total of 49 kills, 44 assists, and 299 digs since her freshman year. Lindsey finished her final season after racking up 242 Kills and 88 digs while playing for Ball State.
To get a closer look at what we can expect from the Cardinals, we asked one of Ball State’s Middle Hitters, Emily Holland (7) to share a bit of insight on what the team, as well as herself, will be doing to prepare for the upcoming season.

Exclusive Interview with UK Rockers Pretty Vicious
Chad Ison: What is the team focus right now going into summer?
Emily Holland: “Our team focus is to have a competitive nature. Early on in the spring, we were practicing technique and fundamentals-now as we get towards summer, we are focused more on the competitive aspects. Drills are more competitive, practices are more competitive, getting us better prepared for the season.”
CI: With three seniors leaving, what will be the biggest void to fill this season?
EH: “This season will be different because we have seven seniors. There’s seven different leaders on the team and I think balancing that leadership will be a little bit of a challenge. When there are fewer seniors on the team it makes it a little bit easier for those seniors to exude that leadership. Now we have seven seniors and four juniors, so that adds a lot of experience and leadership-which will ultimately end up being very helpful once we get into our normal routine.”
CI: For you, personally, what responsibilities will you take on as a senior, that you maybe haven’t had in the years prior?
EH: “I am trying to be more of a leader in more than one aspect. I have always been the type to lead by example more than using my voice. As an underclassmen, it’s hard sometimes to speak up and use your voice but now that I have some experience, it’s been a little bit easier to work on speaking up and leading by my voice.”
CI: What should we expect from the Cardinals during MAC competition in 2018?
EH: ” I think we are going to do really well this season. We did well last season, and now we are returning with a lot of experienced players which will really help us out. Having those experienced players on the team could help us win against some of the teams that we could not beat last year. We are better this spring than we were last fall, which shows that we are building off of the foundation that we set last year. I am really excited about this season.”
CI: Where do you see your team right now and what will be the most important factor for you guys while preparing for the season?
EH: “I have never seen a team that is working as hard as us right now. We have been working out all spring, we’ve worked very competitively, we’ve developed our culture where everyone is doing everything they can to better the team. I think that the most important thing for us throughout the season would be to maintain that competitive drive that we have established.”
Holland enters her senior season with 519 kills, 176 total blocks, and 93 digs.
As for the team, though it is early, success is already showing. The Cardinals recently defeated Purdue in an exhibition match, four sets to none. The season is only months away and our Cardinals will be ready to have the world chirping, come August.
