UK pop singer Lily Allen recently released the single “Higher,” along with another single entitled “Three.” Both tracks are just a taste from her upcoming project No Shame, her first new album since Sheezus (2014). Higher and Three are also the follow ups to her recent hit single “Trigger Bang.”
No Shame is expected to drop on June 8 and will feature artists like Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Mark Ronsen, Nigerian rapper Burna Boy and Cass Lowe.
In a statement via press release, Allen expressed her excitement for the forthcoming album:
Eric Frisch Balances New & Nostalgic Sounds With Acoustic Melodies
“I believe that we as humans work through things by talking about them, and that’s what making music is, for me. It’s sharing things that you hope are going to connect with people, not that are going to connect with algorithms.”
Overall, Higher creates an audibly soothing and delicate sound that tells the tale of two people who’ve got some relationship drama. For instance, during the first verse, Allen sings, “won’t let you do it/ You can’t seduce me, now who looks foolish?” She holds her own with other lines like, “Sorry, but I know your type/ I won’t be undermined.”
London MC Meridian Dan raps the intro to the song and Allen responds with the remaining verses. Her voice ultimately accompanies the soft guitar rifts and beats that truly make the instrumental. Contrary to some of her more recent work like “Fuck you” and “Smile”, Higher introduces a more heavenly aura. The tempo remains consistent throughout as Allen’s rising and falling voice maintains one important message– “You crossed that line.”
Higher creates a soft-pop vibe that really fosters a relaxing atmosphere. Its almost melancholy guitar riffs and subtle beats form the perfect marriage with Allen’s voice. Overall, I think this little snippet of what’s to come with No Shame in June is a worthwhile listen. Check it out for yourself.
