On this week’s Saturday Night Live, “Girl’s Trip” star Tiffany Haddish hosted, and along with Kate McKinnon, starred in one of the craziest sketches of the night.
The last Saturday Night Live sketch of the night was the popular “Whiskers R We”, which features two cat shelter volunteers with not-so-subtle feelings for each other. This sketch has been popular in the past, with hosts Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, and Kristin Wiig also participating with McKinnon.
The tricky thing about this sketch, however, is the use of live cats. Cats are definitely not the easiest animal to train, and along with a live audience, can get easily scared. These two factors almost caused a disaster on this sketch. However, McKinnon and Haddish were trying their best to finish the sketch as well as keeping an eye out for kittens constantly trying to escape.
Right off the bat, the audience can tell that the kittens were trying to escape. Haddish notices this right away, which causes the hilarious ad-lib that even gets Kate McKinnon to break character. Once the bigger cats were handed to McKinnon, however, things got really interesting.
The last cat to come out (unless you count Kat Williams, played by new SNL cast member Chris Redd), was Toby, a Sphynx cat. Toby seemed to not like the audience (or McKinnon and Haddish’s jokes about him), which might be why he immediately started to freak out. This caused Haddish to get into a fighting stance and McKinnon to wrangle Toby and hand him back to the animal trainers. If you look closely, there was even a little bit of blood on McKinnon from Toby.
This sketch should have been an unmitigated disaster. However, Haddish and McKinnon were hilarious, and along with the cats, led to one of the most memorable sketches of the night.
