This is the era of streaming companies, we reposted here many times the advances companies like Netflix and Hulu took to assure their spot as strong creative content producers and as a viable substitute for television. Netflix buying comic book publishing rights to Millarworld, and Hulu winning an Emmy for its show The Handmaiden Tale was just the tip of the iceberg to what is to come for the streaming world.
This week, Amazon took a leap and bought the rights to produce a Lord Of The Rings spin-off show. This is the first time a streaming company makes a content purchase this big, which reinstate Amazon´s effort to not fall back on Netflix.
Timeline: the show will take place before the Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Premier: there is no premier or estimated release date
From The Top: Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos was personally involved in the negotiations
Budget: Amazon, Netflix, and HBO had been approached by the Tolkien estate, who had been shopping the project. It came with an upfront rights payment said to be in the $200 – $250 million range, though some sources say the fee could be slightly below $200 million. That is just for the rights, before any costs for development, talent and production, in proposition whose finances industry observers called “insane.” It is a payment that has to be made sight unseen as there is no concept, and there are no creative auspices attached to the possible series. On top of that, the budget for a fantasy series of that magnitude is likely to be $100-$150 million a season.
