After the announcement at the beginning of April, the beauty community has anxiously awaited the first launch. Unsurprisingly, the initial collection that dropped at the beginning of September did not disappoint. The products that are now available focus on the skin primarily. The line showcases a face primer, foundation, matte and shimmer cream sticks, powder highlighters, a lip gloss, and a translucent blotting powder. It also includes tools and brushes to better utilize the entire line.
Every makeup lover knows the importance of a good base, so the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer and the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation gained instant popularity in the beauty community. The foundation comes in forty different shades, accommodating fair to dark skin tones, along with options for warm, cool, and neutral undertones. The face primer is almost a moisturizing lotion, which helps protect skin from the drying finish of the matte foundation. Paired together, they work well for normal to oily skin types. With my normal skin, the foundation did have a soft matte finish, but I definitely needed the boost of hydration the face primer initially provided. If your skin tends to be dry, I would not recommend the foundation without a really moisturizing primer to go under it.

The next product one would typically use would be Match Stix, which come in a matte and shimmer finish. There are twenty matte shades to use for concealing and contouring and ten shimmer shades to use for highlighting. The matte shades are more difficult to blend into the skin because they dry quickly. The shimmer shades are easier to use and are a fun way to experiment with some bolder, unique colors.
The line offers a few sets of trios, which include a light matte, a dark matte, and a shimmer shade. Personally, these were not my favorite products from the line, but they aren’t terrible. If you really want to try one of them, I would go for a shimmer shade that you can use as a highlighter.
Speaking of highlighters, the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters absolutely stole the show in the initial collection. The powder formulas are extremely pigmented with maximum color payoff in terms of illumination.
There are six compacts, two singles and four doubles, that work with most skin tones. Some of the compacts are wearable for both day and night looks. Others are more editorial, such as the popular true golden shade aptly named “Trophy Wife.”
I’ve really enjoyed this product and have been consistently wearing it since I purchased it. It has a long wear time and gives the skin a beautiful glow without looking too heavy or glittery. Definitely a must-have product.
Another product that I have loved using is the single Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer. The lipgloss is a rose nude shade that looks flattering on any skin tone. It’s the perfect sheer gloss to wear by itself or on top of another lip color. It also smells really good, which is a big plus for me.
It hydrates my lips and is a great go-to color for everyday looks. Another must-have product from the collection.
The final beauty product is the Invisimatte Blotting Powder, which is not really anything special. Does it do its job as a translucent powder? Yes, but there are other more affordable options out there that do the exact same thing. The magnetic packaging is definitely innovative, but I do not think that it is worth the whole price. This problem also applies to the tools and brushes released in the line. They are nice with unique millennial pink packaging, but beauty tools and brushes are a huge matter of personal preference. Every product can be used with whatever you already have at home.
Fenty Beauty received an overwhelming amount of success for its initial collection. Rihanna has consistently been a leader in the music industry and the fashion world, so it is no surprise that she has transformed into a leader in the beauty community. Overall, her line is a bit edgier, but I think that the bolder items available are perfect for anyone willing to try something different. There is still some room for improvement, but there are definitely several noteworthy products for a first launch. Rihanna set the bar high with this initial collection, so I am excited to see what it has in store for the very near future. Fenty Beauty’s next line, called the Galaxy Collection, drops this Friday, October 13th, if you are interested in seeing their holiday season products!
