After everything the music industry has put her through, Kesha has returned with a fresh new sound. The music video for her celebratory track, “Woman”, was released yesterday and is already making waves. However, it’s not the video’s fun vibe that makes Kesha’s song so great. “Woman” what rings true to the message Kesha stands for- empowerment.
In an essay explaining the inspiration behind “Woman”, Kesha expresses the freedom an spirit behind her new music. “I wanted this song to capture that organic, raw, soulful sound and keep the imperfect moments in the recordings because I find the magic in the imperfections.” Clearly, this approach works for her. The authenticity of “Woman” totally outshines the auto-tuned, radio “pop gimmicks” of her old music. Yes, we can all agree that “Tick Tock” will forever be a party anthem; but hearing Kesha unleash this new side of her sound gives a whole new meaning and importance to her music. After years of struggling to be herself in her music and escape the grips of an oppressive contract, Kesha is finally free to do and create she wants. And what she wants is pretty bad-ass.
“I just really f***ing love being a woman and I wanted an anthem for anyone else who wants to yell about being self-sufficient and strong. (Yes, men, this song can be for you too.)” Kesha said in her essay. Personally, hip-hop and alternative R&B are more my speed, but even I couldn’t resist Kesha’s call to unapologetic feminism throughout the song. While the lyrics themselves clearly speak to Kesha’s mission of empowerment (you’re right Kesha, I am a mother f***ing woman!), the power behind her voice alone makes her mission clear. Her raw vocals mixed with candid laugh tracks truly sets “Woman” aside from anything else. That kind of ingenuity in itself proves that Kesha lives out her mantra. Fearlessly releasing the type of music that is true to her artistry and vision speaks volumes to Kesha’s own confidence. If this is the kind of energy and spunk we can expect from Kesha’s upcoming LP, Rainbow, then the rest of her comeback is sure to be revolutionary.
