Look, I’m going to spare you the Top 10 list because you’ve probably read enough of those, and I wouldn’t be able to scale all the albums down to just 10, so I’m going straight to the best of the year.
I assume some people are rolling their eyes at the mere thought of Weezer even being considered good anymore, but hey, they’re nominated for a Grammy, and even though I hate the Grammys, it’s gotta mean something.
Weezer had definitely been in a slump during the 2000s with albums like Make Believe and the Red Album not having a lot of appeal, but then they released Everything Will Be Alright in the End in 2014, and their comeback was born. Two years later and we get their fourth self-titled album aka The White Album, and my faith in Weezer is restored.

I wasn’t even going to listen to this album but I was road tripping with my friend and we needed a new album to listen to in the car, so scrolling through recent releases on Spotify and we come across The White Album. My friend suggested we try it out and I didn’t have too much of an opinion on it, and by the time the first song, “California Kids,” had reached its first chorus, my friend and I were so deep “in the groove” of the song, that we started drifting lanes.
Almost every song on The White Album is catchy to a point of addiction, and they just get more and more charming for each time you listen to them. Youtuber, theneedledrop, in his review for this album said, “it’s not so much Weezer changing their formula that much, they’re just on target with their songs,” and I can’t think of a better way to sum up this album. The songs don’t really offer any new insight into musical exploration, but as corny pop-rock songs come and go, these might as well be the genre’s masterpieces. Songs like “Girl We Got a Good Thing” and “LA Girlz” are both lyrically predictable love songs, but their melodies and guitar solos are so on point, nailing the emotional punch that each respective song requires, and leaves the listener feeling either very happy running on a beach, or completely confused about their feelings for a romantic partner. “Wind in Our Sail” is again, very cute and charming, but that’s exactly what makes it so great. And the same goes for almost all songs on this album, they’re predictable, but they just work so well.
I can’t call this a guilty pleasure like I used to call Weezer. This album is exactly what it needs to be. It’s a self-aware pop-rock album with sweet lyrics, catchy riffs, and great production. In my opinion, this is the best album of 2016.
This time, Elliot is overjoyed.
