Why Women of All Ages Need to Watch "Tully" (Movie Review)
Having followed Yonas for about three years up to this point, the infectious hooks, clever verses, and tropical beats that fill this EP come as no surprise to me. The New York native first caught my attention with his mixtape The Transition in summer of 2012. This tape is packed with warm weather jams that became the soundtrack to my summer 2012. He then followed up with the sequel, The Transition 2: Bright Lights, Big City, the following summer. Both of these mixtapes, as well as the Going Places EP are marked with Yonas’s signature sound that blends rap, pop, and electronic into a fun mix.
After a quiet summer 2014, Yonas took this spring to build up to another project that would dominate playlists again this season. Every other Tuesday throughout February and March, he released a free remix (a series he affectionately called Freemix Tuesday), most notably “Hit List,” an aggressive remix of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” as well as a remix of “Uptown Funk” packed with speedy rhymes.
Yonas began the promotion for this EP by releasing the first single, “Live It Up” on May 12th. As soon as I hit play for the first time on this jam, my favorite track after a few listens, I knew immediately that Yonas would deliver again with this summer EP. The happy beat starts, followed by clever rhymes, leading up to an infectious hook about fun summer nights. Though I can usually expect Yonas projects to consist of endless jams like this one, he took me by surprise on this one as he delivered five diverse tracks. Following this happy summer jam, he provides a darker, more trap-sounding club song in “Photo” and then the more festival-oriented “Night Is Young.” Next, he brings a tropical pop vibe with “Tell Me.” He ends the party with “This Goes out to You,” which I consider the weakest track. He reflects on the journey of creating the project and, as a result, the gratitude he feels towards his fans and supporters. As a whole, I am incredibly impressed by this consistent yet diverse project. As always, I can count on Yonas to create a soundtrack for my summer.
