With the new season of American Horror Story: Cult airing next week, I must say I am skeptical to indulge in this upcoming season. Here’s why:
1. Previous Seasons
I think everyone can agree that seasons 1 (Murder House) and 2 (Asylum) were both the best seasons that the franchise has produced. Coven was good, but didn’t really have the fear factor I was looking forward to. Freak Show, Hotel, and Roanoke were allpretty disappointing and I found myself wanting to stop watching many times throughout them. American Horror Story, for me, has just been a downward slope and I’m not sure if the new season can save me.
2. The Political Plot
The new season follows the life of a Michigan lesbian who goes insane after Donald Trump is elected as the president. Ryan Murphy, the show’s creator, clarified that the season would revolve around the election thematically. Honestly, I’m over it. The reason I watch tv shows is to forget about the madness that is happening in our world for a second. I can go to Twitter or any news channel to remind myself of the chaos that Donald Trump is causing. I feel like many people, both conservative and liberal, could be put off by the fact that this season revolves around politics, but I guess we’ll find out.
3. The New Stars
First off, Lena Dunham…This could get interesting. While I am not a huge fan of Lena in person, I was a fan of her show GIRLS on HBO, so I’m not completely putting it off yet. Billy Eichner will also
be joining the cast, which I am excited about. Other new faces to the show are Colton Haynes and Alison Pill. Since my queen, Jessica Lange, left the show after season 4, no one has replaced her brilliance. Maybe a new actor or actress will fill her spot.
While I remain skeptical about Cult, I will be watching the new season. I’ll try my best to remain optimistic, but if it turns into a hot mess, my American Horror Story phase will be done for good. Watch the season premiere on Tuesday September 5 on FOX and let me know what you guys think of it!
