This week’s playlist includes picks from Run the Jewels, Portugal. the Man, & the Arctic Monkeys. Take a look at the full playlist.
Michael Cottone: ‘Thursday in the Danger Room’ – Run the Jewels (feat. Kamasi Washington)
Run the Jewels are one of hip hop’s most unconventional entities around. El-P & Killer Mike aggressively preach their messages in their music. This song in particular is more personal for the both of them, reflecting on deaths of close friends. The lyrics are substantial, and El-P’s production mixed with a Kamasi Washington feature goes just right.
‘Keep On’ – Portugal. the Man
It took a while, but Portugal. the Man’s new album Woodstock has finally grown on me. The tempo switches on the track make for an entertaining listen. It’s a catchy tune, the instrumentals are quirky but fitting. This song is a big reason Woodstock is one of my favorite albums from this summer.
Maxwell Denari: Still Together – Mac DeMarco
A beautifully composed track by Mac DeMarco, off of his debut LP “2”. It’s the final track on the album and it is so very heartfelt. Slow guitar strumming as well as DeMarco’s high pitched crooning add to the emotional atmosphere of the track quite significantly. The end of the song gives way to DeMarco talking to his significant other in a personal and innocent conversation. Something that truly pulls at the heart strings.
Mason Pippenger: ‘Boys’ – Charli XCX
In one word, this song is a “BOP”. It’s honestly just a really fun song that I’ve been listening to over and over. The little sound affects add to the song and make it really really catchy.
‘Bodak Yellow’ – Cardi B
I’d never heard of Cardi before I saw this music video trending on YouTube and wow…I’ve been missing out. This song is a really heavy rap song that Cardi’s unique voice flows well with. It’s refreshing to find female rappers that really bring something new to the table and spit hard verses. Definitely give it a listen if you’re trying to find some new rap music.
Clay Easton: ‘505’ – Arctic Monkeys
This is a song that you can jam to, and listen closely. When I’m feeling blue this song fits the vibe. One of my favorite songs of all time, really.
Cole Callahan: ‘Indian Summer’ – How Sad
Waking up early for work sucks. Since I’ve been doing that most of the summer, this song is a nice way to give me the positive energy I need throughout the day. Check this band out if you haven’t already.
‘Cigarette Daydreams’ – Cage the Elephant
I was listening to this song while walking around downtown Indianapolis, and the scene felt surreal. Cage made a beautiful anthem.
