Let’s be real here: the music industry is a very jading trade. That’s why it’s nice to talk to artists like Ashley Brinton. Still young and fresh into the music scene, the 16-year-old singer has an optimistic energy and buoyant sensation to her.
The (very) adorable singer is a self-proclaimed “pop with a twist” artist, but despite this generic label, Ashley pulls from a variety of inspirational sources.
“Well with my music now, I always do pop,” Ashley said. “But I always do pop with a twist because it’s very interesting to me having different twists of urban music and R&B, and not so much country, but alternative music.”
She’s your typical, basic everyday teen who just happens to be working with Cory Rooney, a Grammy Award winning producer. She loves fashion, knitting, Bella (or “Belle”, as she pronounced it) Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Zendaya. This wholesome lifestyle lends its hand to her own songwriting about, well, everything that is fundamentally innocent and teen-related. Maybe even somewhat adorably naive.
“Inspiration can really come from anywhere, whether it’s friends boys, life, happiness. So anything in everyday life kind of inspires me,” Ashley said.
Music executive Tommy Mottola discovered Ashley when she was only 14 and guided her to Cory Rooney. Ashley describes the experience as “shocking…like a fictional story” after Tommy stumbled across her three small production videos that she had posted online. Now, Ashley couldn’t imagine her music without the influence and help of Cory and Tommy.
“(Without them), I would’ve always kept on singing, but it would’ve never been to a quality or professionalism that I’m doing it now with Cory and Tommy,” Ashley said. “I loved what I did and I sang all the time and I was making songs, but it was just not where it needed to be. Like to live in LA.”
Her journey into music is as endearing as she is. When she was younger, she naturally gravitated towards music instead of sports. For her, it felt like school was split between going the creative or the athletic route. After falling “deeply in love” with music, she realized that music was something she could do for the rest of her life.
Ashley is confident that she already has an artistic vision, stating, “I think it’s a combination of a bunch of things: style, how my style has evolved, how my music has evolved in two years. It changes a lot. I would say it’s all part of me. It’s all different but it’s all a part of me.”
For now, she plans to release an EP in the coming months. She released her newest single about girl power, “Slow Down”, on August 10th.
“I love inspiring people. I love music, but I think that a benefit from that is being able to inspire people with your words and your music. The production (of my EP) is very inspiring and fun and makes you feel good. That’s kind of what I want to get across, is making people feel good and inspiring them and having them have fun while they listen to my music.”
