The number of terrorist strikes spike.
By now, the entire world knows of the terrorist attacks in Barcelona, Spain. A little over 12 hours ago, a van plowed into a popular street in the city. Among the casualties, over a dozen dead. Almost a hundred injured. This attack in Spain echoes a similar act that occurred a year ago in Nice, France. It was Bastille Day, or French Independence Day. A van plowed into a crowded street on that busy day. In this attack however, there were over 80 casualties. As suspected,, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. This trend of attacking European cities is becoming a trend for the terrorist group. About three months ago, a bomb exploded in Manchester, England, killing almost 20 people, some of them children. And a day later, there was an attempted stabbing in Turki, Finland. Suffice it to say, we all want this madness to end.
The Refugee Crisis
The ongoing refugee crisis is a problem requiring immediate resolution. Hoards of refugees from Syria and Iraq have been flooding European nations. Germany has been the most helpful. Since 2% of the country’s population is from the refugees alone, it is safe to say that they have reached their quota. But Germany has received backlash from other EU member nations. They cited, that allowing too many refugees would be detrimental to the overall economy and ‘image’ of the EU. Other nations like Italy, Spain, and France, put a limit on the amount of refugees they allowed to enter. The U.K, though no longer a member of the EU, had a quota of less than 2,000 refugees.
All of these nations, except Italy (for now at least), have had a rapid increase in terror attacks since the start of the refugee crisis. In France alone, there have been 3 major attacks in the last two years. First there was Charlie Hebedo in January 2015 for misrepresentation of the prophet Mohammed. Twelve people died in this incident. And who could forget what happened later that November. On November 13th night, suicide bombers and shooters hit a concert hall, a major stadium, and restaurants/bars almost simultaneously. This attack left 130 people dead. I wish I could say it gets better.
In June 2016, during Bastille Day celebrations, a medium-sized vehicle, slammed through the crowds in Nice, France. 84 people died. This is reminiscent of what happened in Barcelona on Thursday. Though there were not nearly as much casualties, it was still a senseless tragedy, carried out by a senseless, heartless terrorist group.
Belgium, Germany, Finland, the U.K are among the few European nations that have been explicitly targeted by ISIS. Whether in the form of stabbing, shooting, bombing, or the like. This hated terrorist group has set their sights on Europe, the pinnacle of the Western world. They hate western philosophy so much, they’ll kill for it. Take for example, the Manchester Terror Attack. Imagine coming back to your hotel room while on vacation, and learning that England was once again targeted in the most tragic of ways. Bombs were set off after the end an Ariana Grande concert. 22 were killed, and 250+ were injured. A majority of the victims were young girls. And yet, the EU is doing little to minimize these attacks. Refugees must no longer be allowed in any European nation. Combined with homegrown sleeper cells, the terror attacks have been constantly on the rise since 2015.
This ideology, this hate, must be crushed, destroyed. To do so, will require a world of help and resources. In doing so, future attacks will be preventable.
Hopefully, any future attack in the European continent, or elsewhere in the developed nations, will be thwarted.
