Snapchat now allows its users to track their friends with its new Map feature.
Snapchat has been cutting edge with its bigger updates. From filters to geotags, to the Bitmojis; Snapchat has been making itself even more of a presence in the world of social media. Now, Snapchat seems to be mimicking Apple’s “Find Your Friends” feature so that users can find each other.
The update which came out on Wednesday, June 21, added this new feature for users to explore. It gives users the option to specify which friends can see their locations or to let everyone on their friends list to see. For safety’s sake, Snapchat does not allow for users to see the location of people who are not friends with them. There is no possibility of finding any celebrities through the new update, sorry!
Users can see the entire globe and can contribute to global stories that feature certain events. You can also see more local events when you zoom in on a certain area. When I zoomed in on my hometown, there were like, ten different stories. It was cool, but also I can see someone getting lost in the Snapchat rabbit hole.
Another cool aspect of the new feature is that you can see where your friends are. The Bitmojis stand where the person, or at least their phone is. To be honest, it is kinda creepy. At least when you zoom in, you cannot see the person’s exact location, but you get the general idea.
I think the concept is cool, but I will probably limit my location to only my really close friends. I like that you are able to find more local stories this way also. It is easier. At the same time, I don’t think I would use the maps much. Hopefully it doesn’t go the way of Snapcash.
