The beef between rappers Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj is only intensifying as Remy Ma ponders who she will murder next.
The ‘Mask Off’ freestyle marks yet another track that has been added to the artists’ collection of disses. It was released after 2 Chainz played a snippet of ‘Realize’ where Nicki Minaj fired shots at Remy Ma in a verse. After the verse received much attention, the Bronx rapper responded with her own message. By using Future’s highly popular ‘Mask Off,’ Remy Ma aims to convey one simple message–that she’s on top.
To provide some context, this whole dispute started in 2007 on Nicki Minaj’s Playtime Is Over Mixtape when she dropped her ‘Dirty Money’ freestyle. For instance, lines like “Tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown” and “She won three rounds, I’mma need a hundred thou’” are exactly the reason that animosity arose between the rappers. This freestyle would ultimately be the spark that ignited a timeline of disses and twitter wars between the two. But as a response to the ‘Realize’ verse, Remy Ma fired back with her own freestyle of Future’s “Mask Off.” Listen above.
I’ve got to say that this remix is pretty dope. Although Remy Ma’s contemplations throughout the song sometimes come off as highly aggressive, well, that’s why they call these songs diss tapes. It’s incredibly blunt and clear for all to understand, including Nicki Minaj. “Murder next/ Who I’m murder next?/ Maybe her, nah she ain’t worth it yet/ I burned you/ Your new name is Bernadette,” sings Remy as the freestyle continues.
In another line she raps: “Fake models hoes getting cute/ Don’t hang yourself trying be up in the loop.” Here it’s clearer to understand to whom she’s referring when she says “fake models.” Minaj has maintained an alter ego sometimes referred to as “Barbie,” and just like barbies are fake, or inaccurate, portrayals of people, well, so are “fake” models.
Remy’s ‘Mask Off’ probably won’t be the last we hear of this ongoing dispute between her and Nicki Minaj. There’s no telling what’s to come as the two incredibly renowned rappers battle for the throne in hip hop.
