Last night during Governor’s Ball in New York City Childish Gambino closed out his set with the announcement that his next album will be his last one.
Childish Gambino, known by day as Donald Glover, ended his set with “Redbone”, his biggest hit from his most recent album Awaken, My Love. While he is still fresh off of that release, he seems to be winding down on his music making and increasing the amount of time he’s devoting to acting. He’ll be starring in the new Star Wars movie and Disney’s Lion King remake on top of his popular FX show Atlanta and his new animated Deadpool show.
Right before he left the stage at Governor’s Ball he said to the crowd; “You’re in my heart. I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.” You can hear him say it right around the 5:40 mark in this video of Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” performance above.
Donald Glover has said in the past that he would be retiring the Childish Gambino moniker but has given no indication as to when that may be. With this announcement though, it seems we may have a relative time frame. Time will tell whether or not Donald Glover is serious about whether or not his next Childish Gambino album will be his last.
