Lil Yachty sat down with Zane Lowe on Apple’s Beats 1 radio show to discuss his new album ‘Teenage Emotions,’ his rise to stardom, idols and more.
Lil Yachty’s debut album Teenage Emotions released yesterday (May 26th), and he took some time to sit down with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio. Yachty had a hugely successful career spike in 2016, coming from near anonymity to one of the quickest rising stars in hip-hop. In 2016, Yachty dropped the mixtapes “Summer Songs 2” and “Lil Boat” and had high profile features on D.R.A.M.’s “Broccoli” and KYLE’s “iSpy” that pushed him into the spotlight. 2017, however, has only seen Yachty drop 4 singles from the soon to be released Teenage Emotions.
Teenage Emotions will be Lil Yachty’s first full-length, official album. In his interview with Lowe, Yachty revealed that the album was originally intended to be released “on Christmas last year,” but was delayed due to the demands of his newfound stardom. “I was on tour with Rae Sremmurd, so I was supposed to record with them, but I lost my voice for like two months.” The delay may be a good thing for fans of Lil Boat, however, as he went on to say, “If I would have dropped it on Christmas it would have been nothing like it is now. It’s a completely different vibe, I didn’t even know I was going to make an album like this.”
Lil Yachty also went on to talk about some of his idols and how they have influenced his relationship with fans. He specifically mentions Soulja Boy as one of his main influencers despite their rocky relationship recently. “Growing up, it was Soulja Boy and Lil B. I feel like Soulja Boy was one of the smartest when it came to connecting with your fans and taking that to another level.”
