Summer movie season has arrived!
Let’s take a look at what to expect on the big screen in the coming months. One overarching theme connecting the big releases this summer is that many of them are remakes of classic movies and television shows shows from the 20th century.
1. ‘Alien: Covenant.’ May 15
The original 1979 Alien was made famous for its terrifying and horrific scenes and content. Now, following the 2012 prequel to the original film, Prometheus, this remake of the 1979 classic is bound to be one of the scariest sights of this summer.
2. ‘Baywatch.’ May 26
If you love eye-candy and fan-service, get ready for this one. Between the Rock’s sculpted everything, Zac Efron’s dashing perfection, and Kelly Rohrbach’s bouncing bosom and derriere, this movie should pique your interest at all times. Baywatch takes the classic television series to the big screen.
3. ‘Wonder Woman.’ June 2
Its no mystery why a new live-action Wonder Woman is being released amid countrywide displays of female power and unity in movements like the Women’s March. This feminine spirit is embodied in the glamorous and fearsome heroine. This film is an origin story, taking place in the chaos of World War 1. The woman playing the protagonist is Gal Gadot. As a former combat instructor to the Israeli army, she is a real-life Wonder Woman.
4. ‘The Mummy.’ June 9
Another remake of a classic, this version’s mummy is a woman. Sophia Buitella plays the undead Princess Ahemet of Egypt. The Princess has returned to the mortal plane for one reason, to become the Pharaoh she never became in life. Tom Cruise also makes an appearance.
5. ‘Rough Night.’ June 16
This is for laughs all day long. Scarlett Johansen plays a bride-to-be and her entourage heading to Miami Beach for a bachelorette weekend. Hangover-esque antics ensue. That is, until the girls have to figure out what to do with the corpse of a male stripper. Get ready for the hilarity that follows.
6. ‘The Beguiled.’ June 30
Sophia Coppola brings back Kirsten Dunst as a main protagonist some ten years after her appearance in the eclectic Marie Antionette. Beguiled is yet another remake, poised to be a delicate touch to the summer movie list. Like sipping a cold glass of iced tea on a big balcony in the height of summer, this period southern charmer will leave you feeling like a refined southern belle or gentleman all day long. That is, until things get a bit darker. Set in the midst of the Civil War, a Union Soldier seeks refuge in a southern school for girls run by Dunst and Nicole Kidman.
7. ‘Baby Driver.’ June 30
For an explosive action-comedy, so necessary in the heat of summer, Baby Driver should deliver a punch. It also scored the coveted 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Ansel Elgart plays Baby, a getaway driver for a gang of bank robbers played by the hilarious trio of Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx. Get ready for an incredible soundtrack just as explosive as the action in this to-be hit.
8. ‘Spiderman: Homecoming.’ July 7
Another day, another remake. This one pretty much explains itself. Expect a more down-to-earth flavor in this one as compared to the other recent Spiderman movies. Tom Holland plays a 15-year-old Spiderman and captures the adolescent superhero experience in all its ups and downs.
9. ‘War For The Planet of The Apes.’ July 14
Get ready for nonstop action in the latest title in the remade Planet of the Apes series which began its adventurous saga back in 2011. This title is set to be the most ambitious Apes project yet.
