Let’s take a minute to appreciate the amazingness that is potatoes.
Potatoes are a side dish common in Western culture to make you full (and they can be the main dish such as the baked potato). They are easy to grow, easy to cook, and fairly nutritious; hence why they became an important part of meals for the poor and rich alike.
So much so that the potato famine was one of the worst devastation to hit Ireland and killed about one million people leaving the population well under 30%.
Not having potatoes can kill you. That being said, let’s dive in and talk about some of the ways you can eat the potato.
Who doesn’t love French fries? It’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and salty all over. I’m convinced my body is 80% salt water, so I need salt to fuel my life.
You can also have fries in different ways: crinkle cut fries, super thin, wedges, curly, waffle, the list goes on. They are the perfect finger food side dish to go along with hamburgers or chicken. Why stop at just the type of fries when you can also add toppings! Cheese fries for the lovers of dairy. Carne asada fries for meat lovers. Honestly, who doesn’t love fries?
The classic choice of the bunch is the potato chip. It is cheap, crispy, and goes well with sandwiches. It is almost always put in a child’s lunch box to add a salty delight to their meal away from home. I was the child who put the chips in my sandwich for that satisfying crunch. I still do. Chips also come in all different types. If you love salty, the original potato chip is good for you. You enjoy spice in your life? Grab a jalapeño flavor. If you are one who likes the good ol’ bbq there is a chip for you as well. This saying is true for all chips: you can’t have just one (Lays TM)
Roasted potatoes are for your fancy meals. Think of a homemade Italian feast. The roasted potatoes are sitting right next to the lemon chicken piccata. Enough to make your mouth water. When you get the potato with all the herbs and spices it creates a party in your mouth. Roasted potatoes are truly for the average person as well as the foodie critic.
If you are a person that enjoys mushy food as much as I do, you can imagine how satisfying I think mashed potatoes are. I think of home when mashed potatoes are served. There is something very comfortable about them. Whether it’s a memory of my infant days or a memory of family gatherings with a big bowl of the stuff in the middle, mashed potatoes always brings a smile to my face. Oh, and the more buttery the better I always say.
These are only four types of potatoes, but there are many others you can make, bake, eat, and enjoy. They are my favorite food and seem to go well with just about anything. Of course I need to put this disclaimer in:
