Netflix’s most recent original series ‘Girlboss’ is paired with amazing tunes including powerful tracks from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.
Netflix released their newest noteworthy creation, the series Girlboss, on April 21, 2017. The series depicts the story of Sophia Amoruso and the creation of her business, Nasty Gal. Starring Britt Robertson, this series is a refreshingly funny and creative biography of the entrepreneur’s rise to success. I binged watched the whole thing in two days, and I highly recommend.
But, something that hasn’t been addressed as much in the release of the stunning new series: the soundtrack. This quirky story is paired with amazing tunes including powerful tracks from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. The stunning San Francisco setting and the quirky story is complimented by the retro soundtrack. The music includes so many different genres that work together to set the perfect tone for the story and main character, Sophia’s, personality.
Some of my favorites in the show are:
“TKO” – Le Tigre: A classic early 2000s girl punk track gives that powerful, spunky tone. This song was used in the trailer for the series. It really encompasses the vibe of the show and the message it promoted of feminism and independence.
“Nasty Gal” – Betty Davis: This song depicts a pivotal role in the movie and serves as Sophia’s inspiration for her business endeavor in the series as well as in real life. Another girl power classic, this track gives a funky, retro tone to the show and works perfectly in conjunction with the setting, costumes, and characterization of Sophia.
“Je veux te voir” – Yelle: I have recently gotten really into the French girl punk pop genre and the chill, feminist vibe. Even though I don’t know a lick of French, I’ve been listening to this song non stop. This song evokes that carefree, strong minded sass that is used to characterize Sophia.
“I Predict A Riot” – Kaiser Chiefs: Another 2000s alt-rock jam depicts Sophia’s chaotic and powerful mentality. Once again, this song gives those retro feels with a bit of head banger mixed in. Highly recommend checking out other tracks by Kaiser Chiefs for those angsty days when you need a good rock beat.
I am a firm believer that the soundtrack of a series is one of the most crucial aspects of creating an effective story. In my opinion, Girlboss did an exceptional job. They used the music to characterize the people in the story as well as the location and themes. This series is an organic and inspirational tale and is paired with the best tunes to portray the amazing message and story that begs to be told.
