A recent computer cyber attack has taken place worldwide. The virus has infected hundreds of thousands of computers in most countries with internet.
The virus, nicknamed WannaCry, infects Windows computer systems that have not received the latest security update. The virus has been used to exploit bitcoin wallets of various bitcoin users, and has reportedly stolen tens of thousands of dollars. Major institutions like universities and corporations are under threat for large scale security breaches due to the virus. The most serious of which has been the National Health Service (NHS) of the UK which holds patient care information.
Much of the worldwide blame has been put on the NSA, which had created the exploits the virus has used to infect computers. This leads many to question just how much the NSA hurts, rather than helps in the field of cybersecurity. While major computer virus attacks have happened in the past, most of them have been directed towards particular companies or institutions and have not been on such a wide scale (Target stores, Yahoo mail, etc). Critics of the NSA have stated that only a government agency like the NSA would be capable of producing such sophisticated and powerful computer viruses. We will have to wait and see just what type of data has been compromised over the next week.
