Kendrick Lamar has released the music video for “DNA.,” featuring Don Cheadle, Schoolboy Q, and an appearance from Kung Fu Kenny.
The video was directed by Nabil, a frequent Kendrick collaborator, and starts off with an interrogation scene between Kendrick and Don Cheadle. Cheadle has some pretty good one-liners here, including, “Kendrick Lamar, two first names, huh,” he says. “What the fuck is up with that?” After a little more trash talk, Kendrick uses some superpowers on Cheadle and then the two rap the first verse of “DNA.” back at each other.
The video then takes a turn as Kendrick breaks free and assumes his role as “Kung Fu Kenny” (according to the Chinese letters in the video). Interestingly, the second part of the song, more specifically the outro, is different than the album version. The video ends with Schoolboy Q walking up to the camera and punching the lens.
Overall, the video is once again beautifully directed and shot. I don’t know if it is as impactful as some of Kendrick Lamar’s previous videos, like “Alright,” and even “Humble,” but it is still a fantastic watch.
“DNA.” is the leadoff track after the intro on Kendrick Lamar’s newest album DAMN. and has caused quite a bit of controversy due to its inclusion of a sample of Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera.
