Fordham Rams are tired of the administration taking advantage of its faculty.
At Fordham University’s Rose Hill campus in the Bronx, students stormed President Father McShane’s office in an attempt to get him to discuss problems plaguing the community. Student groups are currently at odds with Fordham’s administration.
Earlier in the semester, Fordham students at the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan formed a club, called Student Justice for Palestine, which was barred from becoming a club and holding events. Rams are constantly butting heads with the administration and this just added fuel to the fire. This really angered students creating more friction with campus authorities.
You don’t lose your rights on college campuses.
Fordham students have also been fighting for adjunct rights as well as faculty healthcare. Students constantly protest on behalf of faculty and professors all around campus for the past few weeks. Fordham’s president will not meet with students though.
The tension has been building for several weeks which finally culminated in students storming an administration building yesterday. Fordham’s public safety tried barring students from entering the president’s office. One student was pushed and held behind an officer. She was saying “It is really hard for me to breathe right now” as she was crushed behind the officer.
The student group, Fordham Students United spearheaded the storming of the building but they were shut down shortly after their demonstration started. The tensions on campus right now are very high. Every professor is voicing his or her opinion to their classes. It has been difficult for everyone involved.
There has been no word from the office of the president. Father McShane currently is acting under “no confidence” from the Faculty Senate. Hopefully, before the academic year wraps up, a compromise will be made between students, faculty, and the administration.
