Josh Brolin has been cast as key character Cable in the follow up to the popular raunchy comedy.
Brolin already plays the role of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it was announced today he will also play the role of Cable in Deadpool 2. He’s the second actor to play multiple roles in the Marvel Universe alongside Chris Evans (Fantastic Four and Captain America).
Cable is one of the characters from the expanded world of Deadpool that is set set to make an appearance in Deadpool 2. Cable is described as being the polar opposite of Deadpool; a controlled man and accepted leader.
Reports from Hollywood were that competition for the role was fierce. Michael Shannon was thought to be the frontrunner for the role, but the studio opted for Brolin instead. Names like Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt were even rumored as well.
2016’s Deadpool was a smash hit, making nearly $790 million worldwide. It broke The Matrix Reloaded‘s record as the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Ryan Reynolds is also of course returning to his staring role as the foulmouthed mercenary. Following the announcement of Brolin as his co-star, Reynolds jokingly tweeted his “disapproval” of Brolin’s casting.
The fuck, Fox! You can't play 2 characters in the same universe!! Josh Brolin was in Sicario and I was in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. pic.twitter.com/AQCRp1aWKg

The cast for Deadpool 2 also includes one of the breakout stars of the show Atlanta, Zazie Beetz, as Domino. No official release date has been set for the film, though looks to be beginning production in June.
