To me, the music I listen to is reflective of my mood, my mental state, and my experiences.
So, when I’m having a particularly terrible day, or life just won’t give me a break; it’s therapeutic to punch a couple sad songs and wallow.
There is a special kind of beauty behind a really gritty, emotional song. It can evoke all kinds of emotions and memories in everyone; and everyone interprets it and experiences it differently. Like for me, Still by The Japanese House reminds me of that first shitty breakup, but that great song might remind someone of a completely different experience. But, in all of these low moments in my life, the beautiful sad song pulls me up. I’m able face how I’m feeling head on with the expressive musicality of the artists I admire.
I ~curated~, if you will, what I think is an impeccable collection of the best and most beautiful sad songs. Listen to these when you want to embrace your inner angst, have a good cry, or just soak in the sheer simplicity and musicality of a beautiful ballad.
Some of my favorites on the playlist:
The Night We Met by Lord Huron: A current obsession of mine. Perfect mixture of musicality and a singable melody. Very chill vibe about the love between two. “I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you” That lyric really gets me for some reason.
Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley: This is a classic. No sad playlist would be complete without it. The romantic bellow of The King will always warm my heart.
NYLA by Blackbear: As a crazy Blackbear fan, I am biased towards any of his songs. This song is a very simplistic depiction of a long distance love story. Quality sad song.
No Surprises by Radiohead: How could this playlist be complete without an angsty song from the 90s? This classic evokes those chill, somber feels with artful production and a great great guitar melodic base.
People listen to music to form a connection and evoke an emotion. It is completely valid and healthy to want to express a bad mood through the music you listen to. That being said, after a couple sad songs everyone needs that happy tune that boosts your spirits no matter what.
Now, I realize this has been incredibly sappy, but my point is: Sad songs are the bomb. I’m trying really hard to negate the stigma that they are exclusively for pity parties. Please hop on this bandwagon.
