From wisdom to humor, from compassion to the incarnation of fear itself, old people are some of the most interesting beings on this planet.
They could be trendy and stylish one minute, then technology confused the next. Old people have it all figured out, and by “it” I mean the meaning of life or as close to meaning as we as a people are every going to go.
Have you ever sat down with an older person and just let them talk?
If not, that should be on your to-do list. It is a treat. I talk as much as I can with my grandfather. He is my favorite human in the whole world. Recently while I was visiting him it dawned on me that he is amazing; in fact most coherent people his age are amazing.
Here is five reasons old people are… well… amazing!
1. Old people are the best storytellers
Through our history it’s always the oldest of the group who passes down stories and myths. They tell stories in a way that causes feelings to awaken. Maybe it’s because the listener can hear and see the experience that the elder is sharing? Maybe it,s because elders somehow make a connection to the past as well as the present? I cry, laugh, cheer, and boo listening to simple stories my grandfather tells about his childhood. I see the visions he lays out for me with his silver tongue. I somehow learn something from every story.
2. Old people are walking talking history books!
I am a strong believer that you must learn from your past, from your history, or you are bound to repeat it. What better way to get a sense of how things were than from those who were there? Through knowing their experiences we can change the future. One does not even have to agree with a person, or like a person, to learn from their past. Older people have lived through World War II, the civil rights movement, and the cellphone invention. Find out what the past was like before wishing to teleport back there.
3. Old people give the best advice
I have learned many life lessons from my grandfather. Two I would like to share:
“Better let the fart out and deal with the shame than to keep it in a deal with the pain”
“Every morning I wake up and I sing and laugh. What’s the point if you are not happy?”
Older people are wise. They have a life time of experience. When and elder gives you advice, they tend to know what they are talking about.
4. Old people will not “sugar coat”
Elders will tell you what they think without trying to make it sound pretty. They get right to the point and never leave others guessing what they mean. Time is a precious thing. Do not waste time on lies and half-truths.
5. The talk about death as if it is an old friend
How bad-ass is it to be able to talk about Death like it is your next door neighbor who is always asking for sugar. Somehow, whether liked or disliked, the fear of death is gone. An acceptance has replaced the fear on the subject. When I think of death it makes me uncomfortable, but my grandfather brings it up like it is no big deal. It is a sad thing that Death is a common thought for old people. Yet , I cannot stop thinking that the hard, painful, acceptance of death is no easy task and, therefore, pretty amazing.
Old people are the best. Learn from them. One day you will be the old person so remember:
