This year’s Oscars’ Academy Award ceremonies were definitely one for the history books.
From blunders to busting bigots, there were very few dull moments from the this year’s 89th annual Academy Awards. Let’s take a step back and help inform you about what there is you need to know about the Oscars.
1. Who really won Best Picture?
In a unprecedented mix-up, La La Land was originally announced to be your Best Picture winner. After celebrating with the cast on stage and starting their acceptance speeches, an Oscars producer ran on stage to rectify the situation. This led to one the most awkward award show moments so far.
Moonlight was announced as Best Picture and the respective cast made their way to the stage.. and La La Land’s cast slowly made their way somewhere else. Reports said that the cast stayed in the theater for 15 minutes after the ceremony was over consoling one another.
2. Viola Davis became the first black woman to win the “Acting Tripe Crown”.
The Acting Tripe Crown is a feat only accomplished by true actors. It requires them to win an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy (for acting… other types don’t count). Many claim this to be even harder than achieving EGOT status. But, Viola Davis became the black woman to win it. She truly deserved it and gave one of the most heartfelt acceptance speeches I have seen in a long time.
3. “Oscar Award Winner Suicide Squad“! What???
Never thought you would hear that one huh? Don’t worry guys, this trash heap of an anti-superhero film only won for it’s hair and makeup design (which I didn’t even think was that great either). The category was weak to start off with anyway, so many Oscars predictors saw this one coming. Its still hard to say though. Definitely leaves a bad feeling in your mouth.
4. Damien Chazelle becomes the youngest person to win an Oscar for Best Director.
As a directing major, I can’t help but beam with pride for Damien Chazelle. I LOVED La La Land (to find out why click here). He created a beautiful film and is now the youngest director to win an Oscar. Congratulations Damien!
5. The real star of the Oscars: Sunny Pawar.
Okay, but have you seen a cuter kid in a tuxedo? No? Correct. Sunny Pawar stole the Oscars and America’s hearts with his adorable smile and tiny tux. Please invite him every year. Do a spin-off series. More cute kids in suits!
Now that award season is coming to a close, what did you like or dislike about award season this year? Did the Oscars disappoint in your opinion, or live up to the hype?
