Nearly three years after her last single, Lorde released “Green Light.” Here’s a review of the new track from the New Zealand pop prodigy.
Aside from the fact that she still puts colors in her song titles, Lorde has clearly changed a lot in two years, as this new track shows.
It feels like a big change from her previous work. Though it still features her signature electronic beat, it also has new EDM influences. The song starts with a more low-key piano accompaniment to her husky voice. Then within the first minute, the beat drops. The piano stays, switching to a more upbeat tune. When the chorus arrives, it’s shouty and head-banging like Lorde has never been before.
Also new, the subject matter. She used to sing about her hometown and teenage life, but this is a break-up song. As the lyrics show, Lorde sings about a woman moving on from a relationship. Her life experiences have changed, and with it, so has her music.
Though surely most expected a more “chill” song, along the lines of “Royals” or “Team,” she still came up with a good, catchy song. Lorde is young enough that we should expect her to evolve, and she is a good enough musician that I trust her to change her style. I am excited for a new album from her and can’t wait to see what she comes up with.
