Imagine topping off midterm week with food poisoning.
Last week was midterms week for me, and one day after studying in the library until midnight I decided to stop at the corner bodega to buy a snack. I settled on some raspberries, since I had basically been living on a diet of teddy grahams and fried rice for at least three days, and figured that I needed some nourishment. But, I made a major error. Being lazy and sleep deprived/just stupid, I didn’t wash the raspberries before I ate them. Aaaand the next day I woke up with food poisoning.
This was especially awful because I really couldn’t afford to be confined to my bathroom, unable to study. I rooted through my first-aid drawer, looking for some Tums or something that might soothe my stomach, when I finally found a velcro pouch with some black pill capsules inside. They were charcoal pills. I remembered that my mom had given them to me my freshman year of college in case I ever got “poisoned,” etc., and how I had written it off as ridiculous; however, I was technically poisoned (by raspberry toxins), and desperate, so I decided to see if they would help me in any way. I searched online to find out the proper way to take them, and it turns out that they are a relatively common, safe pill supplement that can be used in a variety of ways, especially to help with toxins and digestive issues. There are also not many side effects, as long as you remember to drink a lot of water throughout the day (because charcoal can be very dehydrating). So, I got my 8oz glass of water ready and downed it along with one charcoal pill.
I could not believe how immediately I felt the effects, and how efficiently that one charcoal pill I had taken helped with my food poisoning. I took the pill around 12pm, and by 6pm I was cured and able to eat a full dinner. I was also able to get back to studying without any gross stomach distractions, and my dumb decision to eat unwashed raspberries ultimately did not cause me to fail my midterms. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, you can pick up some charcoal pills at your local drugstore and save yourself a lot of pain. Charcoal has been popping up everywhere recently, especially in skincare products, but it can give your intestines a deep-clean as well—I would definitely recommend trying it out.
