On Friday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with President Donald Trump at The White House. When it came time for the press photo op in the Oval Office, something awkward happened.
Whenever a head of state meets with the President of the United States at the White House, it is customary for both leaders to pose in the Oval Office and typically shake hands at the end of the photo op. Although this wasn’t the case for German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In this video, photographers can be heard asking the two leaders to shake hands. Merkel then leans over to Trump and says “They want to have a handshake.” Trump then appears as if he is ignoring Merkel or not hearing her. There were many photographers talking in the room, so regardless of whether Trump heard her or not, it certainly had the media buzzing Friday afternoon.
That was not the only awkward moment between the two. During a press conference, Trump made a joke about he and Merkel both being wiretapped, alluding to Merkel’s phone being tapped by the NSA in recent years. A program that, according to CNN, was ended by Barack Obama after leaks from Edward Snowden.
Keep in mind here that Trump’s wiretapping claims are backed up with zero evidence. In recent weeks, Trump and his administration have made claims that the Obama Administration ordered surveillance of Trump Tower during the 2016 Presidential Campaign. In response to these allegations, House and Senate officials have investigated the matter and have found no indications that any wiretapping of any sorts occurred.
