“Music was how I found friends, how I connected to things, how I made sense of things.”
Tucked away off of 55th and Arapahoe lies one of Boulder’s most eclectic musical sanctuaries. Opened in July of 2015 by Eric Plein, Cosmic Collective is not only a recording and rehearsal studio, but also an underground venue devoted to the enhancement of Boulder’s local musicians and blooming music scene.
Below is an interview with owner Eric Plein.
What brought you to opening Cosmic Collective and what was your inspiration for it?
“I always liked the ‘do it yourself’ kind of attitude, and I wanted to provide a community space that’s more accessible to your average musician.”
How would you describe your space and why is it special compared to other studios?
“I didn’t want it to feel like you were going to an ‘establishment;’ it’s a physical expression of my personality and my experiences. If you’re in a comfortable environment, it’s easier to get into your creative flow.”
What has been one of the greatest challenges of owning your own studio?
“You’re always learning, there’s always something that pops up that you wish you had known, but part of being in business is trying to stay ahead of the curve. It’s always important to ask, what are they doing that’s working? Not working? It’s difficult to monetize art, to monetize creativity… one of the hardest things is not to undervalue yourself, especially in a society that doesn’t appreciate the arts in the same way as sports or other talents.”
What advice would you give to someone searching for a place to record?
“Don’t make your decision based on a single factor, it’s a very wholesome thing…do you connect with the engineer? Do you connect with the ethos and culture of the business? Does it make sense for you? What’s really your goal here? No one size fits all.”
What is it like to own a recording studio in a blooming music hub like Boulder?
“It’s exciting and exhilarating. The scene is growing so fast and it’s so strong, I personally feel that more than other scenes and different locations across the country, the passion of the fans here is really impressive. People want to go out and support their local artist, they understand the value that they provide to the band…because there’s so many passionate people in the colorado music scene, you can’t get caught with your pants down, you gotta want it more than anyone else.”
Cosmic Collective has worked closely with many local artists and bands such as Tenth Mountain Division, Cycles, Na’an Stop, Flash Mountain Flood, Yasi, Povi, and many others, ranging from management and booking to rehearsal, recording, and venue space. They’ve had the pleasure of working with regionally and nationally touring acts such as Euforquestra, Nth Power, Jaden Carlson Band, and Jeffrey Martin.
