The 1975 deliver a chilling and haunting cover of Sade’s song “By Your Side”.
On Tuesday, The 1975 revealed a hauntingly beautiful cover of “By Your Side” by the popular English group, Sade. Lead singer of the band, Matty Healy, unveiled the song on MistaJam’s BBC Radio 1 show yesterday, February 21st. This is the group’s first song since their sophomore album I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It which released in February of 2016.
The band dropped the song in support of War Child – an international non-profit charity that helps raise awareness and support of war affected children.
Healy noted that he wanted to emulate Sade’s timeless and unique sound on this record. The synthesized sounds and a soft saxophone blend together, creating an atmospheric tone that Healy’s voice works perfectly with. While the artist does use auto-tune, it seems to flow flawlessly with the mystic vibe the band takes with the song.
BBC’s Radio host did ask the band’s front man if the fans can be expecting more music like this on their next album (not scheduled to release until next year). Healy did confirm that this single does serve as a self-reference that fans can look forward to.
Overall, The 1975 make a vulnerable and fragile piece of art from Sade’s ballad, doing the group more than simple justice.
