January 2, 2017 was a momentous day for those in YouTube land. January 2nd was the 10th year of the Vlogbrothers channel.
For those unaware, the Vlogbrothers are two brothers, Hank and John Green, who have a channel on YouTube and create videos bi-weekly. The two brothers began vlogging to communicate with each other without texting. Ten years later and they’ve created a community, Nerdfighteria; they’ve made a plethora of other YouTube channels (Sci-Show, Crash Course, thebrainscoop, and Sexplanations to name a few); they host Project for Awesome, a fundraising event to raise money for charity; and they’ve created a number of YouTube gatherings like VidCon and Nerdcon (Not to mention John is the author of best-selling books like Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars.)
If you want a YouTube success story, I would say these two brothers are your best bet. Yet through it all, they always seem to remain humble, humorous, and excited about living.
I hopped on to the Nerdfighteria train about five years ago.
One of my favorite YouTubers, Charlie McDonnell aka charlieissocoollike, continually mentioned John and Hank Green in his videos and wore the Nerdfighter flag proudly. I was curious about this Nerdfighter business, so I looked into it. I was hooked. I loved their message of being the most genuine version of yourself, and loving your passions unironically, like the nerdy person you are. Their YouTube videos are some of the only ones that I still watch religiously. And that’s saying something with how busy my life can get.
I’m honestly so proud of these two brothers, and what they’ve accomplished. They’ve given many people, young and old, a safe, and encouraging community to be a part of. I can’t wait for the next ten years.
