I won’t mince words, Smino is one of the best new artists I’ve heard all year.
Following the recent release of “blkswn“, the title track of his highly anticipated full-length debut Smino is looking forward to 2017. That’s not to say however that he isn’t also taking time to enjoy the now. In a new YouTube reduced series tied MakeMyDay, the St. Louis rapper/producer visited Sumner High School, the first black high school west of the Mississippi. “I gotta do for my city moreso than myself,” Smino says. Engaging the students in an open mic talent show, he adds “expression can take you far and keep you in a really good head space.”
People that do what they wanna do in life have a lot of fun,” Smino shares in the video. “You gotta be from St. Louis to get it, but we got a real hustle mentality – S-T-L right in the middle of the word ‘huSTLe’.” This Friday at Old Rock House in St. Louis, Smino headlines his Kribmas: Home for the Holidays showcase, which also features fellow Zero Fatigue crew member Jay2. While we look forward to 2017 Smino is definitely one of the artists worth paying close attention to as he develops both personally and sonically.
