Spotify and Genius: A Promising Partnership By Ed Kim University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Pop Culture
Since Spotify’s inception, it has become a major frontrunner in the music industry transforming the consumption of music. Streaming has become one of the most popular methods for fans to connect with their favorite songs and artists. Spotify has remained strong in the face of competition from forces such as Apple Music and Jay Z’s new platform Tidal. They have appealed to many users by allowing them instant access to the music they love, without the inconvenience of managing and storing their own personal music libraries. In 2009, a company called Rap Genius hit the scene hoping to alter the ways in which fans analyze and decipher an artist’s lyrics. They utilized a unique platform allowing users to post their interpretations of the lyrics. Fellow users were then able to up vote or down vote these posts based on their own personal interpretations of the same set of lyrics. While the company’s initial focus centered entirely on hip hop, they have since expanded their platform to include other music genres and alternative forms of media. This expansion led to the relaunching of the site where the company officially changed its name to Genius. They announced the creation of two new playlists Behind the Lyrics (Hip Hop) and Behind the Lyrics (HITS) that will soon be made available through the Spotify app and web player. The tracks on these playlists are unique, as they integrate annotations and user commentary straight from the Genius community. Pusha T, Tinashe, and Diplo, some of the industry’s biggest stars, were recruited for this project to take listeners “behind the lyrics” and reveal the inspiration behind their biggest tracks.
