Last night, RECESS, a college Music & Ideas Festival, held their 3rd annual ‘Field Trip’ powered by Southwest Airlines and welcomed 15 of the top college startups to compete in their 2 day competition. After spending the evening hearing pitches from each contestant, we’ve compiled our picks for Top 5 College Start-Ups from around the US.
School: Cornell University
Yorango’s software simplifies rental. With over 4,500 renters on their platform, they are making the process of collecting rent, signing a lease, tracking maintenance seamless. This does not exist in the market place and it is already showing unbelievable success. Yorango was my pick for the top start up company in the field coming out of Day 1.
2.) Ziel Solutions
School: Rice University
Ziel Solutions develops wearable technology to help minimize the risk of injury from repetitive physical activity. Their first product is a patent-pending sensory sleeve for baseball pitches to reduce the risk of arm injuries. As a former athlete, I felt this was a home run. Really excited to see their beta test results this year, as this could be applied to multiple sports and significantly reduce injury in athletes.
School: Babson College
Hubcharge provides wireless charging solutions for mobile devices while enhancing shopping experiences through BLE technology. They install wireless charging systems in spaces such as coffee shops, restaurants, bars, airports hotels etc. In exchange for the service of charging customers devices, HubCharge facilitates and integrates with mobile apps to deliver targeted messages and content to the respective devices. These Babson undergrads definitely are on to something, with successful trials in Boston area restaurants, with the right roll out and mobile delivery service, this could be a staple in restaurants and coffee shops across the globe.

School: Babson College & MIT
Equity Crowd Funding Platform based in Mexico for Latin American entrepreneurs and global investors looking to raise money for the next big idea. These guys have already put the wheels in motion raising over $1.5 million on 25 different ventures. Very exciting approach to investment and start-ups in this region!
School: University of Miami
Royal is the only loyalty platform that automatically manages the loyalty program experience for both the consumer and business owner. Royal is able to provide businesses with free analytics on they rest customers. Royal optimizes customers engagement and purchasing behavior via passive loyalty programs and active deals.Royal takes existing loyalty and promotional strategies and distributes and automates stewards to all Royal users for each brand seamlessly. These guys aren’y reinventing the wheel per say, but their tenacity and salesmanship were enough to win me over and believe they could truly make a dent in this market place. Definitely a couple of young entrepreneurs to be on the look out for!
