For many of us, shoes play an essential role in our lives. I often take for granted just how much my shoes do for me, so I’d like to take a moment to thank my shoes for protecting me from that unsettling looking brown stuff on the street while simultaneously making my feet look fabulous on the daily.
Besides protecting my feet and making them look fabulous, my shoes have joined me on the most incredible journeys of my life. They have walked with me across continents, stood with me as I fell in love, and stayed true as I danced the night away. Here are some of the shoes who have made a mark on my life.
Good Ole Toms
These bad boys joined me the summer before my freshman year of college when I spent twelve days exploring England, France, and Italy. The days were long, demanding 12 hours of walking as I combed the ancient streets of Rome and searched for apartment 221B Baker Street in London. There were also moments where I paused, standing humbled on the beach of Normandy and staring awestruck at the forgotten city of Pompeii. Through it all (including my sweaty feet), my Toms stayed true.
My Running Shoes
I ran my first half marathon in these shoes. When my legs were giving out and my body rebelled against me for making the idiotic decision to run 13.1 miles on the hilly streets of Nashville, my shoes were strong and sturdy. Nay a shoe lace nor my sanity came undone (although the latter was close). Although I appreciate all that my running shoes have done for me, I’ve made a pact with them to never do something so crazy again.
My Hercules Flops
These troopers have done many things with me, but perhaps one of the coolest things I’ve done in these shoes is road trip 8 hours from Nashville to Indianapolis on a whim with two awesome friends to see my favorite band of all time (aka Twenty One Pilots, you should totally check them out). The day of the concert, I sat outside in line with my friends for 7 hours, ate some TGIF, and raged in the pit later on. I cried, laughed, danced, and sang my little ole heart out in my Hercules flops. Post concert, these shoes walked with me and my friends to get some Steak ‘n Shake for a midnight snack. These shoes will always remind me that unexpected adventures with good friends are the best kind of shenanigans.
My Wear-Only-In-Special-Circumstances-Because-They’re-Too-Dang-High-For-Normal-Circumstances Shoes
I wore these babies to my senior prom. My best friend asked me to be his date and I couldn’t have been more thrilled because not only was he going to be an awesome date, but I also had a major crush on him. It wasn’t until we were slow dancing to “Say Something” that I realized what I felt for him was a lot more than a crush. It was in these shoes that I fell in love with my best friend. They must be a good luck charm because a year and a half later, I love him even more now than I did back then.
These shoes have seen me through thick and thin, have stayed strong when I could not, and have taken me across the world.
