Attending a school with over 30,000 students can be overwhelming. With massive lectures and classes taught by teaching assistants, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. By utilizing your campus resources and making connections with faculty and students, you can make the most out of your public education.
1. Take a few moments to get to know your professors. It can be as simple as lingering after a lecture to introduce yourself or stopping by their office hours to talk. Professors want to be able to put a name to a face and showing them that you can take the time to make yourself known, shows that you care about your education and want to establish connections.
2. Do the proper professor research. Having a teacher, whether it’s a professor or TA can make or break a class. Utilize websites like ratemyprofessor.com and myedu.com to see what past students have said about the class and the teacher. You can also use these sights to see how students rated the difficulty levels of classes and the average grades given by the professor.
3. Be honest on teacher evaluations. You know those scan tron surveys we get in every class at the end of semester that everyone fills out as quickly as possible? Take the time to be thorough and honest with them. Believe it or not, staff members review them and use the feedback. Also, they’re completely anonymous, so you’re allowed to be as honest as possible (while still being considerate).
4. Join ClusterFlunk. ClusterFlunk is a great online tool that allows students to discuss their classes and assignments with other students. Besides getting homework help and posting study guides, it’s a great resource for shyer students who don’t like asking questions in class.
5. Take advantage of campus resources. There are endless amounts of resources to utilize whether it’s academic or personal. Familiarize yourself with all the tools you have at your disposal and use them to your advantage.
6. Get to know your RA. If you’re a freshman, college can be especially overwhelming. If you live in a dorm, get to know your RA. Resident Advisors are there to help you in any way they can. Not only can they provide you with guidance and advice by they can help connect you with other resources.
7. Get involved. One of the best things about attending a big school is that there are lots of opportunities. With hundreds of different clubs and groups, you’re bound to find something that fits your interests or gives you the chance to try something new. Getting involved allows you to surround yourself with people with similar interests, which will make you feel at home.
