If you have a sweet tooth, like myself, take a quick look at these recommendations of what and where you should order your next cheat meal. No one should ever deprive themselves of a sugar fix. It’s healthy. Healthy as in, if you’re scared you might have a stress-induced meltdown in the middle of your next exam, please plan to go treat yourself (before or after, no judgements). Having experienced Iowa City for a few years now, I’ve gathered some of the most popular local places and personal favorites into a best desserts list that is short, sweet, and to the point. Enjoy.
Tiramisu @ Bread Garden Market
First glance at their bakery and you might think you’re in heaven. Every once in a while I’ll swing by to grab a single éclair or a macaroon. I dare you to go ahead and try their tiramisu. But whom am I kidding? All of their cakes (cheesecake included) are delightful beyond words.
Chocolate Cake @ Atlas
Yes, please. For the die-hard chocolate lovers like myself, I quote this straight off the menu: “If not ordered with the main course, you need to allow 20 minutes for preparation as it is a decadent flour-less chocolate cake, cooked to order warm, liquid center, scoop of vanilla ice cream.” Need I say more?
Apple Cider Donuts @ Wilson’s Apple Orchard
Although this is only a seasonal pastry, it deserves to be on this list. The donuts are served only on Wednesdays in September and October, so hurry quick before they’re done for this season. Served warm, fresh, and covered in cinnamon and sugar… they taste of nothing less than happiness. Highly recommended.
Red Velvet @ Molly’s Cupcakes
It would be a shame if Molly’s wasn’t on this list, its the hottest sweet spot in town. They have every cupcake your little heart can dream of. I have more of a classic flavored preference, but all of their mini cakes are moist and frosted just right. Other fun flavors include: kahlua, Boston cream, coconut dulce de leche, eggnog, strawberry shortcake, and oh so much more.
Nutella Pie @ Pullman Diner
Also served with banana ice cream, this pie won Top Chef: Downtown People’s Choice Dessert back in March 2015. Sounds like everyone is still obsessed with Nutella. Well me too, so I’ll be ordering this before my main course next time I step foot in Pullman’s!
