A deadly plane crash occurred on set of Tom Cruise’s latest movie Mena.
On September 11, two crew members working on the set of Cruise’s new movie Mena died in a tragic plane crash over Medellin while en route to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport. A third person was present on the flight, and reportedly has survived the incident. It has also been confirmed that Cruise was not present on the flight, nor was director Doug Liman.
Notorious Hollywood pilot Alan Purwin, famous for piloting helicopters for some of Hollywood’s biggest movies—Jurassic World, Tropic Thunder, Die Hard and many, many more—was pronounced dead at the scene. Carlos Berl, a Colombian native was also found dead at the scene, along with pilot Jimmy Lee Garland who was severely injured, but survived. Garland is currently in intensive care at a hospital in Medellin.
It is speculated that bad weather conditions led to this tragic accident, though nothing is certain as of yet.
The movie, Mena, will feature Tom Cruise in a story about a man named Barry Seal, a drug smuggler working with the Medellin cartel that became an informant for the DEA.
Hollywood has truly suffered a great loss and Alan Purwin will be remembered fondly as the industry’s go-to helicopter pilot.
