As the 3-D stop-motion film, The Boxtrolls, releases this Friday, Nike has teamed up with Laika on a limited-edition Roshe Run inspired by the film.
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the ‘Trollstrikes’, as they’re called, capture much of the same characteristics that the dingy and quirky Boxtrolls possess within the film. Featuring a distressed leather upper with burlap overlays, iridescent sewer-green heel panels, cobblestone-printed midsole, distressed leather Swoosh on the sides and a waffle-patterned outsole. The kicks also feature a twine heel loop, cardboard tongue labels, cheese-print sockliners, dual twine laces and steampunk lace locks.
To further tell the story of the flick and the Boxtrolls experience, each pair comes complete with a custom, laser-cut shoe box featuring gear shapes and the movie tagline ‘Dare To Be Square.’ Decorative tissue paper inside the box unfolds to be the front page of the ‘Cheesebridge Cheesecloth’ newspaper, while Boxtroll Bandages (screen-printed Dri-FIT Elite socks) and a custom, screen-printed burlap shoe bag complete the package. All of the materials of the shoe and packaging were inspired by the Boxtroll Cavern and are made from the same Boxtroll-friendly materials found in the film.
“We tried to capture a little bit of the dark and dingy world that the Boxtrolls live in but, just like in our own world, it’s the inhabitants that bring life and fun to the party,” Hatfield says. “I hope we captured that as well.”
The film releases Friday, September 26. It follows the Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures. They lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs in the cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When Archibald Snatcher, the town’s villain, schemes to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground where he meets and teams up with Winnifred and, together, devise a plan to save Eggs’ family.
